How to work it out
The measure is the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U), U.S. city average, all items, not seasonally adjusted (BLS series CUUR0000SA0). The index was 240.849 in August 2016 and 334.980 in August 2026.
Today's index divided by the old index, times the old amount: $50,000 x 334.980 / 240.849 = about $69,541. Going the other way, $50,000 today buys what about $35,950 bought in 2016 (50,000 x 240.849 / 334.980), a loss of 28.1% in buying power.
Other amounts, same ratio
| 2016 amount | Needed in Aug 2026 to match |
|---|---|
| $30,000 | $41,725 |
| $50,000 | $69,541 |
| $75,000 | $104,312 |
| $100,000 | $139,083 |
Each figure is the 2016 amount x 1.3908.
Worked example*: did your pay keep up?
Say you earned $50,000 in August 2016. The made-up pay levels below show what a given pay today is worth in 2016 dollars (divide by 1.3908).
| Pay today | Rise since 2016 | Worth in 2016 dollars | vs $50,000 |
|---|---|---|---|
| $55,000 | +10.0% | $39,545 | -$10,455 |
| $62,500 | +25.0% | $44,937 | -$5,063 |
| $69,541 | +39.1% | $50,000 | even |
| $75,000 | +50.0% | $53,925 | +$3,925 |
A paycheck can go up while its buying power goes down. The line to compare against is +39.1%, the average price rise over those ten years.* Your own prices may have risen more or less, see why your own prices may differ from the headline.
Limits
The all-items index is an average of a national spending mix. Your own spending mix will differ. The figures are not seasonally adjusted and compare one month, August, in two years. Recent months can be revised. This page does not forecast prices and does not say how much money you need.
Common questions
