The numbers
| Dollars | Bitcoin | |
|---|---|---|
| Dozen eggs, October 2016 | $1.39 | 0.00218 BTC* |
| Dozen eggs, latest figures | $2.27 (Aug 2026) | 0.000028 BTC (Oct 9, 2026)* |
| Change | +63% | about 78 times fewer BTC |
Egg prices are BLS average price data, series APU0000708111 (Grade A large, per dozen). *Bitcoin amounts are from the Signal 13 video, which took bitcoin prices from blockchain.com; this page did not independently re-check them. They imply a bitcoin price of about $638 in October 2016 and about $81,700 on October 9, 2026, derived here by dividing the egg price by the bitcoin amount.
Why one ratio goes up and the other down
An egg price in dollars asks how many dollars one dozen eggs trades for. An egg price in bitcoin asks how many bitcoin. Eggs rose about 63% against dollars over the decade. Bitcoin rose roughly 127 times against dollars on the implied figures. A dozen eggs therefore buys fewer and fewer bitcoin even though it asks for more dollars.
Neither number is "the real price". Each says what eggs cost in that unit. A person paid in bitcoin and a person paid in dollars saw very different egg prices over the same years.
Eggs have been bumpy in dollars too
BLS egg prices over the same stretch: $1.46 in August 2016, $1.71 in August 2021, $3.12 in August 2022, $2.04 in August 2023, a peak of $6.23 in March 2025, and $2.27 in August 2026. The ratio view and the dollar view both swing.
Worked example
Example: someone holds 0.00218 BTC in October 2016. On these figures that buys one dozen eggs. The same 0.00218 BTC in October 2026 buys about 78 dozen. This is arithmetic on the figures above, not a statement about whether anyone should hold bitcoin; bitcoin has also fallen sharply over past stretches.
Common questions
Does this mean eggs got cheaper? Only measured in bitcoin. In dollars they cost more than in 2016.
Why bitcoin and eggs? Eggs are a plain, widely bought item with a clean public price series, which makes the ratio easy to see.
