How this is calculated

Gold amount (troy ounces) = dollar price divided by the price of one troy ounce of gold in US dollars. Grams = ounces x 31.1035. What one ounce buys = gold price divided by the item price. Nothing is stored or sent anywhere else.

Common questions

How do I convert dollars to ounces of gold?

Divide the dollar amount by the current price of one troy ounce of gold. Enter the dollar amount above and the tool does it at the live gold price, and shows grams too.

What is a troy ounce?

Gold is priced in troy ounces. One troy ounce is about 31.1 grams, a little heavier than the 28.35 gram ounce used for food.

Where does the gold price come from?

The live USD price comes from Coinbase's public spot price for gold, with Gold-API as a backup. It is requested by your browser when the page loads and when you press refresh. If neither can be reached, you can type a price in yourself.

Why does the same price in gold change?

The dollar price of gold moves all day. A $5,000 purchase is a different amount of gold at different times. This tool shows one moment, not a trend and not a prediction.

Where do the everyday prices come from?

They are U.S. city average retail prices from the Bureau of Labor Statistics Average Price Data for August 2026 and October 2016. They are national averages, so your store may differ.

Is this financial advice?

No. It is a converter for education. It does not say gold is a good or bad thing to hold.
